Poland Joins EU’s AI Gigafactory Push with €130M Investment in Poznań
Poland is on the brink of an exciting development in artificial intelligence. The country is finalizing its participation in the European Union’s AI Gigafactory program, which is designed to bolster AI research and development across Europe. The Polish Ministry of Digital Affairs recently announced that formal discussions with EU partners are almost complete. There is anticipation for an official application to be submitted before June 20, 2025. This initiative is supported by significant funding – around €50 million from the European Commission will be combined with an additional PLN 340 million (approximately €79.7 million) from the Polish government to develop the Piast AI Factory at the Poznań Supercomputing and Networking Centre.
This is an important move for Poland, further cementing its status as a budding tech hub. There have been recent investments in supercomputing capabilities that underscore this growth. For example, a partnership between Kulczyk Investments and NVIDIA aims to build one of Europe’s most powerful supercomputers in Poznań, utilizing the GPU-as-a-Service model. The increase in local capabilities is drawing attention and investment from major tech firms. Additionally, telecom operator Play and its parent company Iliad’s Scaleway are creating a sovereign cloud infrastructure specifically for Poland. All of these developments are part of a broader strategy to enhance the country’s capabilities in AI and IT infrastructure.
The AI Gigafactories initiative, first announced by the European Commission in September, aims to establish a network of specialized centers that can advance AI technology and foster innovation throughout Europe. The Piast AI factory is expected to focus heavily on sectors like health and life sciences, cybersecurity, sustainability, and more, including public services. This suggests a comprehensive approach to integrating AI into various parts of society and industry.
The projected growth for the proposed Gigafactory in Poland is notable, with plans to scale up to 30,000 GPUs—an investment that could reach about 5 billion PLN. This capacity represents a significant opportunity for Poland to lead in AI advancements, benefiting both local businesses and entrepreneurs. As a result, tech professionals can anticipate new opportunities and environments that support AI development, while companies may find innovative solutions to enhance their operations.
