OpenAI and AMD Forge Landmark Deal for AI Power Boost
OpenAI has teamed up with AMD in a significant agreement to use AMD’s latest Instinct graphics processors, signaling a new wave of development in AI infrastructure. This long-term partnership aims to provide an enormous six gigawatts of computing power, which is among the largest chip deals in the industry focused on artificial intelligence to date. As demand for generative AI continues to grow globally, OpenAI is expanding its capabilities to address these emerging needs.
The rollout will start with one-gigawatt of AMD’s upcoming Instinct MI450 chips, set to launch in the latter part of 2026. This initial phase will gradually ramp up to a total of six gigawatts as new generations of GPUs become available. This collaboration is a strategic move for OpenAI, especially in light of the challenges and bottlenecks caused by supply dependencies on Nvidia, a major player in the AI chip market. By diversifying its partnerships, OpenAI is not only enhancing its operational resilience but also ensuring a steady supply of critical computing resources needed for its projects.
Both companies will focus on optimizing hardware and software to enhance their performance and energy efficiency. This joint effort is vital for running large-scale data centers, which are essential to support the increasing complexity of AI systems. AMD’s CEO, Dr. Lisa Su, emphasized that this agreement is mutually beneficial, aiming to facilitate an ambitious expansion of AI infrastructure worldwide. For OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, this represents a significant leap forward in harnessing the required computing power to maximize the potential of artificial intelligence technologies.
From an economic perspective, AMD anticipates that this partnership could yield tens of billions of dollars in revenue while boosting its earnings overall. At the same time, OpenAI benefits from the substantial processing capabilities that are crucial for its expanding library of AI models and products. This strategic collaboration hints at a future where both companies could play pivotal roles in shaping the AI industry landscape, enhancing innovation while fostering a more competitive environment among chip manufacturers.
